Mary Larsen takes her health seriously, with help from Dr. Leino.
Mary Larsen of Glencoe has a spring in her step and a sparkle in her attitude – she’s anything but “middle-aged.”
Though Mary is in her middle years, statistically speaking, she has made some decisions about health and happiness that will serve her well as she engineers the second half of her life.
When Mary and her husband, Al, moved to Glencoe four years ago, her first visit to the clinic landed her squarely in the capable hands of Dr. Amanda Leino, family medicine physician. “She’s great – she believes in prevention,” Mary says. “I really enjoy working with her. She listens to me, and she respects my time.”
Mary is looking ahead to her future role as “empty nester” with mixed feelings. But while it may be hard to say “goodbye” to being her kids’ daily caregiver, she is revving up for an active, self-challenging lifestyle that will make the transition easier to manage – even fun.
“My mom has had Alzheimer’s disease since she was 70. I’ve been listening to the news and reading, and it seems like the best advice for delaying memory problems is to keep learning new things,” she says.
There’s also heart disease in Mary’s family, so she watches what she eats and stays active. Dr. Leino adds, “Knee surgery last November sidelined her for a time, but she made a steady, careful comeback.”
Mary and Al will be putting some serious miles on their Harleys, enjoying mid-life together on the open road. “Mid-life is all about attitude,” says Dr. Leino. “Mary’s attitude will help her live the healthiest life possible!”
