Research has shown that decreased lower body strength is related to increased risk of falling. The Minnesota Department of Human Services and Minnesota Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association have teamed up to offer a 30-second screening test that enables people to assess and reduce their risk of falling with a few simple exercises that can be performed at home.
To download a brochure that includes instructions for conducting and scoring the risk assessment, as well as directions for performing exercises that reduce the risk of falling, visit the Minnesota Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association.
For safety, the assessment should never be performed alone. Be sure to have a strong adult stand ready to support you in case you are unsteady during the assessment. If you score at moderate or high risk on the assessment, see your health care provider for a referral to physical therapy. A physical therapist can perform a more thorough evaluation and design an individualized program to improve your strength, balance, flexibility and coordination.
