Cardiology

Cardiologists from the Minneapolis Heart Institute visit GRHS three Fridays per month and are also available for telemedicine appointments one Friday per month. You will be scheduled with one of the physicians below.
Said Alsidawi, MD Said Alsidawi, MD

Dr. Alsidawi specializes in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine. He completed his residency, a fellowship and internship at the University of Cincinnati. He also completed a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Alsidawi is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography and Heart Valve Society. He has advanced training in valve diseases and echocardiography and is certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Richard Bae, MD, FACC Richard Bae, MD, FACC

Dr. Bae earned his Bachelor’s degree in biology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed his residency and fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases and the National Board of Echocardiography.

John Bernhardson, MD, MBA, FACP John Bernhardson, MD, MBA, FACP

Dr. Bernhardson earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Iowa in Des Moines and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Bernhardson’s special interests include general medicine, cardiology and geriatric medicine.

Nicholas Burke, MD M. Nicholas Burke, MD

Dr. Burke is a graduate of Yale University Medical School. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota, where he returned for his residency in internal medicine and fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology. Dr. Burke is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases, and the American Board of Interventional Cardiology.

Durand Burns, MD Durand Burns, MD

Dr. Burns earned his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of Minnesota. He completed a fellowship in cardiology and congestive heart failure and cardiac transplant at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Burns is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease and has special interests in congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and heart transplantation.

Bjorn Flygenring, MD, FACC Bjorn Flygenring, MD, FACC

Dr. Flygenring earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Oslo in Norway and his medical degree at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik. He completed fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at the University of Seattle in Washington. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases.

David Hurrell, MD, FACC David Hurrell, MD, FACC

Dr. Hurrell received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Mayo School of Medicine in Rochester. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, affiliated with Harvard University in Boston, and a fellowship in cardiology at the Mayo Clinic. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases.

David Hurrell, MD Marc Newell, MD, FACC, FSCCT

Dr. Newell earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Minnesota. He completed his residency at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and his fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Newell is certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has special interests in echocardiography, nuclear medicine, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT.

Wesley Pedersen, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FAHA Wesley Pedersen, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FAHA

Dr. Pedersen, Medical Director of Valve and Structural Heart Disease Program, specializes in transcatheter (minimally invasive) valve repair and replacement, complex coronary intervention, and percutaneous ventricular support. He earned his medical degree from the University of Washington and completed his residency at Hennepin County Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in cardiology at St. Louis University. Dr. Pedersen is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and the American Heart Association. He is certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
